Police searching for antiques shop thief who 'walks like a penguin'

Suspect stole more than $30K in jewelry

POSTED: March 19, 2014 12:01 a.m.

Oakwood police are searching for a short man “who walks like a penguin,” who is suspected in an antiques shop burglary.

Investigator Danny Sridej said the man was caught on video wandering around Aardvark Antiques with his hands in his pocket for about an hour before he walked toward the back of the building and unlocked the latch on a roll-up door.

The same man returned the next night and entered through that roll-up door, stealing jewelry, which the owner said was worth thousands of dollars. The incident happened March 9 at the store at 4316 Mundy Mill Road, according to a news release from the owner, Charles Pharr.

Pharr said the jewelry was worth more than $30,000 and the man also damaged electrical wires, “thinking he was disabling the security system,” Pharr said. “Luckily he did not disable the system and he was caught on video.”

The man took “really nice estate jewelry pieces,” Pharr said.

“At first I wanted to keep it quiet because I didn’t want any concerns by people who might consign with me, but when I saw that jerk (on video), I just wanted to catch him.”

Pharr said he is offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction.

“This guy knew what he was doing,” Pharr said. “This was not a first-time thing.”

Pharr also said he has made changes at his store since the robbery.

“We’ve ordered the best alarm and monitoring system,” Pharr said, “so we’ll have that along with the video.”

He said the doors are always checked, but not that day.

Sridej described the man as white, likely in his early 50s, between 180 and 210 pounds and between 5 feet 4 inches and 5 feet 6 inches tall.

Anyone with information can call Sridej at 770-534-2364. Residents should not approach the man if they see him, but call 911 instead.
