Gainesville boys golf team breaks school record

The Gainesville boys golf team set a school record by carding a team score of 270 (18-under par) at the Apple Mountain Invitational tournament on Saturday in Clarkesville.

The score shatters the previous team record of 289 (1-over par), which was first set in 1979 and tied multiple times during the 2012 and 2013 seasons. The mark is also an Apple Mountain Invitational record.

Spencer Ralston led the Red Elephants with a 9-under 63 to win low medalist honors. Lawson King finished second with a 4-under 68.

Jackson Bishop shot a 69, Grant Lasseter carded a 70, and Nathan Williams finished the day with 73.

Gainesville will compete in the Hall County Championships on Monday and Tuesday at Royal Lakes Country Club.

GAINESVILLE GIRLS WIN SPRING SWING: Led by an 83 from Ashleigh Bishop, the Gainesville High girls golf team repeated as champion in the Spring Swing on Saturday at Mossy Creek Golf Course in Cleveland.

Also for the Lady Red Elephants, Madeline Harr careded an 88 and Morgan Reece finished at 89.

On Monday, Gainesville opens the Hall County Golf Championship at Royal Lakes Country Club in Flowery Branch.

YOUNG SHOOTS 75 FOR NORTH HALL: Senior Hunter Young carded a 75 as the North Hall boys fired a combined 331 on Saturday in the Camden Classic at the Osprey Cove Golf Club in Kingsland.

Young had a birdie on three of his final five holes. Also for North Hall, Clay Hoffman and Cord Sanford each finished at 82.

Baseball

JACKSON COUNTY SPLITS DOUBLEHEADER: The Panthers lost to Eastside 10-2 before winning 7-3 in Game 2 of Saturday’s doubleheader.

In Game 1, Joel Ellis was 2 for 4 with a run and an RBI, Nick Corso was 1 for 3 with a double and a run scored and Brett Bowen was 1 for 3 with a double and an RBI for Jackson County (6-2).

Jeremy Cook was the losing pitcher, giving up five earned runs over five innings.

Coleman Barbee picked up the Game 2 victory for the Panthers with five strikeouts and two runs on four hits in five innings of work. Jace Latty pitched the final two innings to earn the save.

Jacob Banks was 2 for 3 with two runs scored, Travis Vickers was 2 for 3 with a run, two stolen bases and an RBI, Patrick Overstreet hit a two-run home run and Tyler Sartain was 1 for 1 with two RBIs.

Jackson County hosts Johnson at 5:55 p.m. on Monday.
