POSTED: March 3, 2014 1:00 a.m.

Riverside Military Academy senior cadet Jacob M. Deem was officially accepted to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.

U.S. Congressman Jack Kingston, who represents Georgia’s 1st District, selected Cadet Capt. Deem as his principal nominee, or first choice overall. Each member of Congress may nominate up to 10 candidates from his or her district for consideration to military service academies.

Deem is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Nicholas Richardson of Fort Stewart. He is a boarding cadet and commander of Alpha Company at RMA. His responsibilities include commanding and instructing the company at all formations; ensuring company preparedness and knowledge of the chain of command; and executing orders, directives and policies received from superiors.

During summer 2013, Deem participated in the American Legion Georgia Boys State program and the Boys Nation program in Washington, D.C. He was one of only two peer-elected State Senators who represented Georgia at Boys Nation. He presented the bill he created in response to tragedies such as the Boston bombings and 9/11 terrorist attacks.

He received Riverside’s Jerry Blackstock Award for exhibiting outstanding leadership qualities and the Commandant’s General Excellence Medal. Deem serves on the RMA Honor Council, is a peer-elected member of the RMA Horton Society and a member of the National Honor Society.
