High school scoreboard: Feb. 17

The Gainesville boys weathered a tough second half against Cedar Shoals but were able to come out on top 53-51 in the Region 8-AAAAA tournament on Monday in Loganville.

The Red Elephants led 26-15 at half thanks to a strong defensive effort, but Cedar Shoals stormed back in the third and fourth quarters to challenge the team.

Gainesville’s Luke Maddox paced the team with 24 points.

The Red Elephants face Clarke Central in the tournament semifinals at 8:30 p.m. tonight in Loganville.

GAINESVILLE GIRLS 44, WINDER-BARROW 27: The Lady Red Elephants also secured a spot in the Region 8-AAAAA semifinals with the win on Monday in Loganville.

Shikiya Brown led Gainesville (20-6) with nine points, Paisley Lee notched eight, and Tamia Rucker added six.

The Lady Red Elephants face Clarke Central at 4 p.m. today in Loganville.

LAKEVIEW GIRLS 51, COMMERCE 28: Kaylee McClendon scored a team-high 15 points, while Hanna Grogan finished with 12 and the Lady Lions earned a spot in the Region 8-A championship game.

Schyler Miller contributed with nine points for the Lady Lions in Monday’s win, and Haley Cash added seven.

The Lakeview Academy girls will play for the championship tonight at 7 p.m. at Commerce High School.

Baseball

EAST HALL 10, CHESTATEE 0: Jack Hagwood threw three shutout innings with two hits, a strikeout and a walk and went 2 for 4 with two RBIs for the Vikings on Monday.

Hunter Buffington pitched the final two shutout innings with two strikeouts for East Hall and went 2 for 3 with an RBI. Jesse Winters added two hits for the Vikings.

WEST FORSYTH 11, FLOWERY BRANCH 1: The Wolverines improved to 1-0 on the season with a win over the Falcons in five innings on Monday night. Flowery Branch (0-1) hosts Centennial on Wednesday night at 5:55 p.m. in Flowery Branch.
