Holly Theater seeks actors and musicians for play

Auditions open to men, women and teenagers

POSTED: February 13, 2014 1:00 a.m.

Dahlonega’s Historic Holly Theater announces auditions for its upcoming production of “Smoke on the Mountain.”

Set in the 1930s, this musical tale introduces the singing Sanders family, who perform their traditional and bluegrass gospel songs for the members of the Mount Pleasant Baptist Church in Mount Pleasant, N.C. Pastor Oglethorpe welcomes the family to the church, where their individual stories and beliefs are shared. The audience serves as the members of the congregation.

The hilarious production consists of almost 30 gospel tunes, all of which could have been performed at the time by such a group. There is a pleasant mixture of energetic rousing numbers, plaintive hymns and soulful praise songs. The songs vary from the well known, such as “Amazing Grace” and “I’ll Fly Away,” to the more obscure ones, such as “Filling Station” and “Christian Cowboy”.

Auditions for characters include:

Pastor Oglethorpe — enthusiastic, young minister

Three older women — matriarchs of the congregation

Sanders Family, which include:

Father Burl — late 40s

Mother Vera — late 40s

Uncle Stanley — open

Twins Dennis & Denise — teenagers (17+)

Older sister June (20s)

Musicians needed include a piano player, guitarist and string bassist. The performance also could use a banjo player, fiddler, autoharpist, ukulele player and harmonica player.

Audition times will be 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 15; and 1-4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 16 at the Lumpkin County Parks and Recreation Building, 365 Riley Road, in Dahlonega between the new Lumpkin County Justice Center and Dahlonega City Hall.

Cold readings from the script plus a choice of songs — Wonderful Time Up There,” “The Filling Station,” “Bringing in the Sheaves,” “I’ll Fly Away,” “When the Roll Is Called Up Yonder,” and “Amazing Grace” — will be required.

Musicians must come prepared to play two songs.

A tentative rehearsal schedule has been set for 7-10 p.m. Mondays and Wednesday evenings and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays.
