Gainesville schools to vote on restored school calendar

POSTED: February 3, 2014 12:12 a.m.

After initially reviewing a reduced 2014-15 school calendar, Gainesville City Schools officials will present a fully restored year at tonight’s board of education work session.

Superintendent Merrianne Dyer said the proposed calendar had seven reduced, or furlough, days. That proposed schedule has been under review by the individual school governance councils.

“Since (the) Jan. 6 (work session), we were advised of the increase in state funding,” Dyer said. “Therefore, the calendar being presented is for a full 180-day year for students and 190 days for teachers.”

The school system’s last full year was the 2008-09 school year.

In mid-January, Gov. Nathan Deal announced a proposed $547 million increase in education spending for the upcoming fiscal year. It’s expected most schools across Georgia will be able to revert to a full school year with those funds.

Tonight’s board work session is 6 p.m., at the system’s headquarters at 508 Oak St.
