The Local Agenda: Hall commissioners to review application for boat storage facility

POSTED: January 20, 2014 11:29 p.m.

An application for a proposed boat storage facility in a residential area off Lake Lanier will be reviewed today during a work session of the Hall County Board of Commissioners.

A final vote on the project is likely to be made on Thursday.

The county planning commission has recommended the board vote down the project, slotted for a tract on Mountain View Road in West Hall, largely due to the opposition of residents who say rezoning the area to allow commercial development would change the character of the neighborhood.

Tim Whitmire, the project developer, will now get a fresh hearing on the matter.

“I realize there is a lot of opposition when it comes to the community and the people,” he told The Times on Monday, “but I also think that there is quite a bit of deception involved in that.”

Whitmire said he believes the public has misunderstood the nature of his project, which he insists will not look like the worn boat storage facilities built around Lake Lanier decades earlier that many residents view eyesores.

At a planning commission hearing on the project earlier this month, resident Gary Garrett said “many people know (Whitmire) as a quality builder, but has anyone seen a beautiful boat storage once it has turned 10, 20, 30 years old? I think the answer is obvious.”

Whitmire’s proposal calls for 116 boat slips, an existing house to serve as an office, and a larger existing house that would be used as a private residence.

“I feel like it’s a great project,” he said.
