Gainesville: Free tax preparation assistance available

POSTED: January 15, 2014 11:58 p.m.

Income tax preparation assistance will again be available beginning Jan. 29 in Gainesville.

The Center for Family Prosperity and the Georgia Mountain Food Bank are teaming to offer the free help. The Gainesville-Hall County Community Service Center will open the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Center on Jan. 29.

Tax services will be offered at the Community Service Center at 430 Prior St. SE in Gainesville on Wednesdays from 3-7 p.m. and Feb. 8 and 22 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. through March 5 by appointment only.

Tax services will be offered at the Georgia Mountain Food Bank at 1642 Calvary Industrial Drive SW on Fridays beginning Jan. 31 from 3-7 p.m. and Feb. 15 and March 1 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. through March 21 by appointment only. To make an appointment, call 770-503-3336 or go to the free tax prep link at gainesville.org and send your name, phone number and best time to call, and a volunteer will contact you.

A complete list of documents needed for the appointment can be found at www.gainesville.org/center-for-family-prosperity.

Since VITA opened in 2009, it has completed 867 returns, and the numbers grow each year, said Phillippa Lewis Moss, director of the community service center.

“Families continue to look for ways to cut costs and make the most of their annual state and federal refund checks. Making an appointment will give each taxpayer the personal assistance they need to file an accurate return. The free tax preparation services are offered by IRS trained volunteers and are available to families with annual gross incomes up to $49,000.00,” Moss said.
