Georgia Power: Be alert for payment scams

POSTED: January 15, 2014 12:26 a.m.

The threat of identity theft fraud has led Georgia Power Co. to warn customers to take caution when providing personal or financial information.

The company issued a news release saying it “has received reports of scam artists attempting to defraud customers by posing as Georgia Power employees.”

In such cases, customers are asked to provide account information over the phone for a prepaid debit card in order to avoid having their power cut off.

Georgia Power reminds customers to verify identification of anyone who calls, and says it will never ask customers to provide debit card information over the phone for account payments. Instead, the company will phone with a prerecorded message when an account is past due.

Anyone contacted by a person claiming to be from Georgia Power and demanding payment is asked to report the incident by calling 888-660-5890.
