The Local Agenda: Registration underway for Citizens’ Academies

POSTED: January 13, 2014 11:48 p.m.

Gainesville and Hall County both are holding academies this spring to educate residents about the governments.

City Manager Kip Padgett said the Gainesville Citizens’ Academy is not a typical classroom lecture, but includes one-on-one time and classes taught at places like the police shooting range and the driving range at the city’s golf course.

“Having taught the Citizens’ Academy to more than 300 residents in the past 12 years, we have received tremendous feedback on what the community wants to know about local government,” Padgett said in a news release. “We want the classes to be interesting.”

Gainesville’s free nine-week course is 6-9 p.m. Tuesdays, March 11 through May 13. It is open to those 21 and older.

Register by Feb. 28 at www.gainesville.org or by calling 770-531-6598. Class size is limited.

The Hall County Government Scholars Academy includes tours of many facilities and also is free.

“We want to encourage citizens to be active in their local government,” County Administrator Randy Knighton said. “Participants will gain an intimate understanding of how their tax dollars are spent and what issues face Hall County government.”

The sessions will be held 6-8:30 p.m. Tuesdays, March 18 through May 13. Class size is limited.

A registration form and syllabus can be found here. Contact public information officer Katie Crumley at kcrumley@hallcounty.org or 770-297-5504 for more information.

Flowery Branch council set to hear audit

The Flowery Branch Town Council meets Thursday and will hear a fiscal year 2013 audit presentation.

Also on the agenda is a second reading on annexing four properties along Spout Springs Road and Old Orr Road. If combined, the properties would contain approximately 20 acres, sufficient for big-box development, according to City Manager Bill Andrew.

The meeting is 6 p.m. at City Hall, 5517 Main St., Flowery Branch.
