Gainesville police officer Chelsea L. Laughlin is in stable condition at Northeast Georgia Medical Center following a Friday afternoon traffic accident at E.E. Butler and Jesse Jewell parkways.

Police spokesman Cpl. Joe Britte said the crash happened around 12:30 p.m.

“The officer was making a right from E.E. Butler onto Jesse Jewell and the cars collided — sort of like a sideswipe type of collision,” Britte said.

The Georgia State Patrol is investigating.

Patrol spokesman Gordy Wright said Laughlin, 24, of Gainesville was driving a 2009 Ford Crown Victoria and Jerry Nicholson, 55, of Cleveland was driving a 2007 Avalanche, both vehicles heading south in the right turn lane on E.E. Butler.

The Avalanche had turned into the left westbound lane of Jesse Jewell, Wright said.

As the Ford turned right, the driver lost control, Wright said, and traveled into the westbound lane and struck the Avalanche in the right side with the left front corner.

Neither driver was given a citation at the time of the accident.

Nicholson was not injured.

“The vehicle — as far as damage on his car — was slight, but in ours was moderate,” Britte said.
