GBI now involved in case of 2 missing Dawson men

POSTED: January 9, 2014 12:33 a.m.

The GBI has been called in to investigate, and foul play has not been ruled out in the disappearance of two Dawson County men who were last seen Jan. 2.

It’s been nearly a week since Mason Cox and David Wood, both 20, seemingly vanished after a night of fishing from a dock in the area of Fredericks Cove on Lake Lanier off Ga. 400.

Dawson County Sheriff’s Maj. Tony Wooten said officials didn’t have any evidence leading them to suspect foul play. The men’s fishing poles were found at their homes.

“We reached out yesterday to the GBI for their assistance,” Wooten said Tuesday. “We’re continuing to follow all leads in the case.”

Sheriff’s officials had planned to go out on a boat with members of the Department of Natural Resources to search the area of the lake where the men were fishing, but that area was too frozen.

According to their parents, the young men said they were headed out to go fishing about 3:30 a.m. Jan. 2 and would return later to spend the day with their families.

“They went night fishing that morning and were supposed to come back and hang out with us for the day after New Year’s,” Ethelyn Geiger, David Wood’s mother, said shortly after the disappearance. “They didn’t come back. We haven’t seen them since. We don’t know where they are.”

The sheriff’s office launched a full-scale search after the men were reported missing by their parents.

Cox left behind his cellphone, wallet and the shirt he was wearing earlier that night, something that baffled his mother, Leanne Cox. Wood meanwhile took his phone.

Wooten said a neighbor provided video footage of a vehicle pulling up to one of the homes and then leaving the night the men reportedly went missing. The office has sent the video out to be enhanced and is not releasing a description of the vehicle.
