Hall Planning Commission rejects boat storage plan

POSTED: January 6, 2014 7:52 p.m.

Without discussion, the Hall County Planning Commission voted Monday night to recommend denying a proposed boat storage facility on Mountain View Road in West Hall.

The matter now goes before the Hall County Board of Commissioners for final consideration.

Developer Tim Whitmire is proposing a business on a 3.83-acre tract at Propes Drive, as part of a rezoning to planned commercial development.

About 150 residents showed up, dressed in red, to oppose Whitmire’s request.

Gary Garrett said “many people know (Whitmire) as a quality builder, but has anyone seen a beautiful boat storage once it has turned 10, 20, 30 years old? I think the answer is obvious.”

Whitmire said he feels he has “a great project.”

“I see a huge need for boat storage in this area,” he said.

Whitmire lives at the site and plans to have 116 boat slips, an existing house to serve as an office, and a larger existing house that would be used as a private residence.

He first brought the plan to the planning commission in October, and when the same number of residents showed up in red opposing the plan, he asked the commission to table the item so he could work things out with his neighbors.

Opponents said they believe a boat storage facility wouldn’t fit in the residential area on Lake Lanier.

Garrett told the commission Monday night he would like to see either Whitmire “be a good neighbor” and withdraw his application or the commission recommend denial.

David Gurley said he believed the rezoning would open the door for other rezonings “so that 10 years from now, Mountain View Road could look like Holiday Road (in Buford), littered with marine businesses, some viable and some not.”

Asked by the planning commission if he had talked with neighbors about the proposal, Whitmire said he “met with a few who were kind enough to come talk with me one on one.”

But basically, he added, “the agenda was ... to talk me out of it, and I was ready to meet for common ground, because I believe in the project.”
