Little shop of safety is scheduled Saturday

POSTED: October 3, 2008 5:01 a.m.

LISTEN

Area agencies are hoping families will browse through their "Little Safety Shoppe" on Saturday at Lakeshore Mall.

Hall County Fire Services, Hall County Sheriff’s Office, Gainesville police and fire departments and Safe Kids Gainesville/Hall County have teamed up for the event, which is set for 10 a.m.-6 p.m.

The agencies will have displays set up with tips and information about keeping safe and preventing fires and crime. They also will have tips handy about child passenger and vehicle safety.

"October is Fire Prevention Month, and we decided that instead of focusing solely on fire, we’d just try to keep everybody safe all the way around," said Lt. Beverley Walker, Hall County Fire Services’ fire-life safety educator.

She noted that Child Passenger Safety Week has just passed.

As Hall County’s emergency medical services provider, "we want to make sure people are safe from unintentional injuries as well," Walker said.

"We’re going to (have) balloons and some fun stuff for the kids to see," she said.

Fire mascot Sparky also might be on hand to entertain the kids.

"This is a time we want people to drop by and say hi and get (answers) to any questions they have about how to put in their child’s car seats or smoke alarms, those kinds of things," Walker said.

The agencies collaborated for a similar effort several years ago, she added.

The University of Georgia Cooperative Extension Service also is expected to set up a display.

Walker said the state Department of Natural Resources also has been invited to the event, but regardless of whether an official from that agency shows up, "we will have water safety info."
