Forsyth County slaying case remains unsolved a year later

POSTED: December 11, 2013 11:47 p.m.

More than a year later, the murder of Nelson Garner remains a mystery.

The 60-year-old Cumming man was found dead in his Middle Georgia deer processing business on Dec. 2, 2012.

Garner’s body was discovered by his brother at about 9:30 p.m. at Garner’s Grinder on Ga. 16 in Sparta, which is in Hancock County.

The case remains a top priority for the Georgia Bureau of Investigation’s Milledgeville office, said Sherry Lang, GBI director of public affairs.

Lang couldn’t release any details about the case, but said it is “still being actively investigated.”

Authorities have withheld the cause of death due to the investigative value, though they have said it was apparent that Garner had been killed.

He had last been seen alive at 4 p.m. that day.

Garner and his brother stayed at and operated the well-known area business during hunting season.

Anyone with information that could help in the investigation is asked to call 478-445-4173.
