Gainesville going to DeKalb for semis; Buford at home

POSTED: November 30, 2013 11:46 a.m.

Just like last season, Gainesville's football team will have to find a way to win in enemy territory in order to reach the Class AAAAA state championship game in The Georgia Dome. Buford, meanwhile, can punch its ticket to the Class AAA title contest in the friendly confines of Tom Riden Stadium.

Top-ranked Buford (13-0) won a coin flip against fellow No. 1 seed Callaway (12-1) on Saturday morning and will host their state semifinal matchup on Friday.

The No. 3 Red Elephants (12-1) were not as fortunate, as they lost their coin flip to top-ranked Tucker (13-0) and must travel to Hallford Stadium in Clarkston on Friday for their semifinal meeting.

Kickoff for both games is set for 7:30 p.m.

Gainesville is riding an 11-game winning streak this season and has won eight consecutive postseason games dating back to last season, including a 28-14 road win over Whitewater in the 2012 state semifinals.

The Red Elephants defeated Mundy's Mill 42-28 in the quarterfinals on Friday at City Park Stadium to clinch a trip to their third consecutive semifinal and their first-ever meeting with Tucker.

The Tigers, who won state championships in 2008 and 2011, shut out Ware County 29-0 in their quarterfinal matchup Friday night.

Buford advanced to the semifinals for the seventh consecutive season with a 36-6 victory over Carver, Columbus in their Class AAA quarterfinal on Friday at Tom Riden Stadium. The win marked the third consecutive time the Wolves have ousted the Tigers from the state playoffs.

Callaway defeated St. Pius X 35-21 Friday night in Hogansville.

Buford's suffocating defense has allowed eight points or fewer in 9 of 12 contests this season, and the team has not surrendered more than 14 points in a game all year. The Wolves' smallest margin of victory was a 24-point win, 38-14, over Gainesville on Sept. 6.
