Hall names Collier as 2014-15 system teacher of the year

POSTED: November 22, 2013 12:48 a.m.

Mary Anne Collier is passionate about two things: mathematics and teaching.

And Thursday, the Chestatee High School math teacher was awarded for that passion by being named the 2014-15 Teacher of the Year for the Hall County School District.

“I was shocked,” Collier said. “I’d like to think that I do my job well, but I hope that every teacher you ask would say that.”

This year, Collier is teaching accelerated coordinate algebra and analytic geometry for the honors freshman classes at Chestatee. She remembers enjoying math when she was young, but did not consider being a teacher until one of hers made an offhand comment.

“When I was in honors calculus as a (high school) junior, my calculus teacher would send people to me from other classes to be tutored,” she recalled. “One day, I was tutoring somebody in one of his classes and he stood over me and asked, ‘Have you ever thought about being a teacher? You have a really good way of explaining things in your own words so that it makes sense.’”

Collier is now in her eighth year of teaching. She’s been with Chestatee High since 2007, save for the 2009-10 school year when her husband was transferred to Miami for his job.

“I’m excited about seeing students ... get excited about being successful in math,” she said.

Chestatee principal Suzanne Jarrard said the high school is “blessed” to have Collier on its team.

“She is a dynamic educator,” Jarrard said. “She not only excels within the walls of her own classroom but also is a leader among her peers.”

As the Hall Teacher of the Year, Collier is now up against others across Georgia for the state honor. Finalists for that will be announced in the spring.

Earlier this year, Gainesville Schools named middle school band instructor Joey Forbes as its Teacher of the Year.
