WHHS student receives Senate nomination

POSTED: October 28, 2013 1:00 a.m.

West Hall High School student Austin Paul has been selected to be the Hall County School District nominee for the United States Senate Youth Program.

Paul will represent the district in the next round of competition. One student from each congressional district will ultimately be selected.

The Senate youth program is designed to broaden the knowledge and understanding of high school students about Congress and the legislative process.

“(Paul’s) application was outstanding, and (his) knowledge and poise during the interview were truly impressive,” stated Paul’s letter of congratulations from Dr. Sally C. Krisel, director of Innovative and Advanced Programs. “This is a tremendous accomplishment for you, for the teachers who have guided you and for your family. I have no doubt that you will represent the school system well in the statewide competition.”

Paul will now take the program’s exam. Then a review at the state level of nominees’ applications and examination scores will take place. One student from each congressional district will be chosen for an interview on Nov. 15 in Atlanta. Two state delegates will be selected from those interviewed.

Each recipient will receive a $5,000 scholarship and an all-expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C., from March 8-15.
