Gainesville Police, other authorities arrest suspect in Mississippi bank robbery

POSTED: October 2, 2013 1:12 a.m.

A suspect in a Mississippi bank robbery was arrested in Gainesville on Friday, authorities said Tuesday morning.

Investigators with the Gainesville Police Department, working with Mississippi police and U.S. marshals, arrested 29-year-old Kenyatta A. McGee, a wanted fugitive from Mississippi.

McGee is accused of robbing a Members Exchange Credit Union in Ridgeland, Miss., on Sept. 24. Ridgeland is about 10 miles north of Jackson, Miss.

“Shortly after the robbery, investigative information did lead to McGee as being involved in the case, at which time arrest warrants were issued from Mississippi. Further investigation revealed that McGee had fled to Gainesville,” police spokesman Cpl. Kevin Holbrook said.

Gainesville investigators began working with the Southeast Regional Fugitive Task Force and Mississippi authorities.
Holbrook described the robbery.

“There were two female employees inside the building that he restrained and (who) gave him access to the vault,” he said. “McGee fled with a large sum of money. It appears there was a waiting vehicle outside the bank.”

Olivia Mae Walker, a woman McGee was in a relationship with, was behind the wheel, Holbrook said.

Walker, 31, was arrested in Mississippi and is charged with conspiracy to commit robbery and one count of simple robbery.

“It appears she was an employee of the bank and assisted McGee with the robbery,” Holbrook said.

McGee is a Mississippi native, and his possible ties to Gainesville are unknown, Holbrook said.

Gainesville police and the Southeast Regional Fugitive Task Force executed the search warrant at Harrison Square Apartments off Athens Street around 10:30 on Friday night.

McGee was taken into custody without incident. Gainesville police investigators seized an undetermined amount of cash during a search, police said.

McGee will be extradited to Ridgeland to face charges of robbery, conspiracy to commit robbery and kidnapping. He is being held in the Hall County Jail.

The investigation is ongoing, Holbrook said.
