Class Notes: Wauka Mountain wins 2013 School Bell Award

POSTED: September 24, 2013 11:34 p.m.

Wauka Mountain Multiple Intelligences Academy has won the 2013 School Bell Award, presented by the Georgia Association of Elementary School Principals.

“You can apply if you have innovative strategies, if you’re doing something different to meet the needs of children,” Principal Jo Dinnan said.

“For example, instead of just rotating children through art, music, physical education and computer on a four-day rotation, which is typical, our children have choice classes,” she added, saying students get to choose which classes they will take. Topics include violin, culinary arts, archery, equestrian skills and foreign languages, among others.

Students take these classes twice a day on a 10-week rotation.

“We just give (students) a lot of flexibility,” Dinnan said.

Dinnan will travel to Savannah in November to accept the award at the association’s fall conference.

UNG, Brenau give high ‘return on investment’

The University of North Georgia and Brenau University have been ranked by Affordable Colleges Online as colleges that provide a high return on investment for tuition dollars.

The former North Georgia College & State University, or the Dahlonega campus of the now-University of North Georgia, was ranked No. 15 on the list, with Brenau coming in at No. 18. Georgia Tech topped the list of the 27 out of 188 Georgia colleges.

The rankings were determined by statistics from the National Center for Education Statistics, Integrated Post-Secondary Education Data System, the Carnegie Foundation and PayScale.com, according to the website.
