Controversial development gets OK from Hall planning commission

POSTED: September 16, 2013 10:01 p.m.

The Hall County Planning Commission approved a rezoning request by Kelley Gary to allow recreational vehicles and other commercial vehicles to park on his property.

The commission approved the request unanimously. Commissioners Craig Heighton and Johnny Varner were absent.

The commission approved rezoning about 3.2 acres on the west side of Thompson Mill Road and southwest of the intersection with Friendship Road from Agriculture Residential to Planned Commercial Development for an RV parking lot and future commercial space.

Several residents were at the meeting in opposition to the request, citing the possibility of noise, runoff from rainfall and reduced property values. The land is in the city of Braselton.

The subject area is surrounded by commercial zoning. However, residents of the Clearwater Plantation in Buford had several concerns, including traffic.

There were petitions both for and against the new development. The request was granted with several conditions, including no entrance for storage off Thompson Mill Road, Gateway Corridor standards be applied to any future construction and no outside storage.

The request now goes to the Hall County Board of Commissioners for final approval.
