Gainesville school board trying to clean up problems with janitorial services

POSTED: September 16, 2013 9:12 p.m.

The Gainesville City school system is having problems with its janitorial services.

At the monthly meeting Monday night, members of the school board expressed displeasure with Southern Management, the company that provides janitorial services.

“Principals have had to take more time with it than they should, and that’s not their job,” said board Chairwoman Maria Calkins.

Southern Management began providing services to the school system on July 1. The board’s comments came after a recent performance review of the company.

The complaints mainly centered around the company’s failure to adequately maintain supplies and employee shifts as well as the general level of quality and communications.

Company representative Cory Crane explained that the problems were due to management challenges after the manager in charge of the operation with the school system suddenly quit. He assured the board that everything will be running smoothly by the next board work session on Oct. 7, after which the board will decide if further action is necessary.

The board also called a meeting for Thursday to adopt the final millage rate for financial year 2014.
