Demolition began Wednesday on the old Hall County Parks and Leisure building on Rainey Street and could be done in the next two weeks.

Project administrator David Shumake said plans call for the building, now owned by Gainesville City Schools, to be torn down and the area grassed over.

The school system bought the former county building for $225,000 to be paid over the course of three years.

Gainesville-based Simpson Trucking and Grading is doing the project for $36,500. Asbestos removal had to be performed at the 1086 Rainey St. building first, which was completed recently and cost $9,875.

The property is expected to be a part of the system’s eventual redesign of that area for the schools there, including Gainesville High, school board member Sammy Smith has said. Initial intentions are to use the space for extra parking.

Smith said funding for this project comes from special purpose local option sales tax funds and the school budget’s general fund.
