Hall school board plans traffic relief at Mount Vernon elementary

POSTED: September 9, 2013 6:03 p.m.

The Hall County Board of Education is working with county government to relieve traffic problems at Mount Vernon Exploratory School, off Jim Hood Road in North Hall.

“Hall County is looking at the possibility of paving a section of T Martin Road, where our driveway will connect,” explained Executive Director of Facilities Damon Gibbs.

T Martin is currently a gravel road. The problem comes from congestion at the school during drop-off and pickup times.

“It’s a disaster waiting to happen,” said board of education Chairman Nath Morris at the Monday work session. “There are impatient people who do not want to sit in traffic, and they’ll go on the side of the road. I heard somebody say they almost hit a school bus head-on.”

Gibbs said that situation can be resolved by moving the school drop-off and pickup traffic to T Martin Road with the new driveway, when T. Martin is paved by the county.

“It’s going to be a much safer environment when we get finished with it,” Gibbs said. “We’ve got to wait on the county to take care of their piece first.”
