Previous story:

A number of hopeful city leaders qualified Monday for positions open in this year’s municipal elections.

Danny Dunagan, current mayor under the old Gainesville City Council structure, and Charles Alvarez, a real estate agent, both qualified for the new elected mayor position in Gainesville. Both had previously announced their intentions. The new position will be in addition to a council of five who represent five wards.

Other wards up for election this year in the city include Wards 1 and 4. Sam Couvillon, an insurance broker, qualified for Ward 1, which was vacated by Dunagan. Incumbent George Wangemann qualified for Ward 4.

The Gainesville City Schools Board of Education also has Wards 1 and 4 up for election. Brett Mercer qualified for Ward 1.

In South Hall, only incumbents qualified Monday for the open positions.

Those hopefuls in Flowery Branch are Mike Miller for mayor, Fred Richards for Post 3 and Joe Anglin for Post 4. Post 5 also is up for election.

In Oakwood, incumbents Lamar Scroggs, Sam Evans and Ron McFarland qualified for mayor, Post 1 and Post 2, respectively.

Incumbents also qualified in North Hall’s cities, including James Nix for mayor of Clermont and Milton Turner for mayor of Lula. Incumbents Vicky Chambers and Mordecai Wilson also qualified for Wards 2 and 3, respectively, in Lula.

No one qualified Monday in Gillsville, which has the mayor and two council seats open.

Qualifying continues today and Wednesday for most cities and through Friday for Clermont and Gillsville. Qualifying fees vary by post depending on the salary for the job.
