The Local Agenda: Gainesville Planning and Appeals Board has short agenda

POSTED: August 13, 2013 12:03 a.m.

The Gainesville Planning and Appeals Board has just one item on its agenda for its meeting today.

FD Group LLC wants to annex about an acre of land at 420 Atlanta Highway into the city to build a Family Dollar store. Annexing into the city allows the development to have city sewer access.

The property is in poor condition, planning documents said, and the four vacant buildings there will be demolished. The company has received a land development permit from Hall County.

Gainesville staff recommended the project.

Walters Barn to ask for ‘agri-entertainment’ use

Jim Walters, whose barn is a popular wedding venue, will go before the Hall County Planning Commission on Monday to get approval to hold events at his barn.

The Hall County Board of Commissioners approved the “agri-entertainment” ordinance in July. It allows social and entertainment gatherings at agricultural venues in agricultural-zoned districts.

The ordinance includes several restrictions, including how far the building is from other property owners’ property lines, limiting noise and the number of attendees.

The types of events include farm weddings, receptions, public gatherings or similar uses determined by the county planning director. Events shouldn’t negatively impact neighboring properties.

Walters is the first to apply for the land use designation.

Other items on the agenda include a few proposed rezoning changes.

Kelley Gary is expected to ask the commission to rezone a 3.2-acre-tract on the west side of Thompson Mill Road to put in parking for recreation vehicles and future commercial buildings.

Stephanie Olson Gordon wants to rezone about a 10-acre-tract at the intersection of Monroe Circle and Duckett Mill Road so she can use the land as building lots.

Smith Pipe Dream LLC is requesting to rezone more than 2.5 acres at the intersection of McEver Road and Chamblee Road for an auto repair and body shop. It is also asking for a parking variance.

The commission will also consider changes to the county’s sign standards to address digital billboards.
