Look out July; August is already gaining on you.

After the wettest summer month in decades, two days of heavy rains have continued Northeast Georgia’s soggy season.

More heavy rains Thursday washed out part of Talmo Road in East Hall County, closing for three weeks, authorities said.

Water was overtopping Ed Cobb Road in East Hall, Hall County Fire Chief and Emergency Management Director David Kimbrell said.

The waters washed out a portion of Talmo Road between where either end of Ed Cobb Road intersects with it. It also moved a home a few inches on its foundation.

Scott Swafford lives at that home with his parents and said “within 45 minutes to an hour it looked like a lake out here.”

Louise Taylor, Swafford’s mother, said she has lived in the area since 1987 and has never seen anything like it.

The storm also washed a small utility building on the property downstream until it was stopped at Talmo Road.

Talmo Road will be closed to through traffic for about three weeks due to the washout, according to a news release from the Hall County Sheriff’s Office. Detours will be in place.

As of Thursday evening, there had been no other reports of damage or problems because of severe weather, Kimbrell said.

A total of 0.78 inches of rainfall were recorded at Lee Gilmer Memorial Airport in Gainesville, according to the National Weather Service.

More than 2 inches of rain fell Wednesday.

The weather service is forecasting a 60 percent chance of showers today, with thunderstorms likely. Temperatures will sit in the mid-80s during the day, dropping to the low 70s at night.

A slight clearing trend is on the way this weekend, with the chance of thunderstorms dropping to 50 percent Saturday and Sunday with temperatures reaching the upper 80s.
