Recent Chestatee grad making his mark at US Track and Field Junior Olympics

Brandon Thompson wasn’t about to miss out on the opportunity to make a splash on the biggest stage.

Running in the US Track and Field National Junior Olympic Championship, Thompson, a recent Chestatee High graduate, has proved he can hold his own against the best sprinters nationally in his age group at North Carolina A&T University in Greensboro, N.C.

“It’s pretty unbelievable getting to compete in this event,” Thompson said. “It’s been a great experience.”

On Saturday, Thompson helped lead the 400-meter relay group from the Major Impact Track Club out of Alpharetta to a fourth-place finish in the 17-18 year old race with a time of 41.42 seconds, improving on the time the team comprised of Thompson, William Brown, Phillip Moore and Zachary Gunnz ran in 41.6 during the preliminary portion.

Thompson will again have a chance to earn a spot on the podium, running his specialty 100-meter in the finals at noon Sunday. He earned a spot in the finals with a fourth-place qualifying time of 10.61 and fifth-pace in the semifinals at 10.81.

For Thompson, it’s tough to say which is his favorite race, even though he’ll specialize in the 100 at the next level.

Recently, Thompson switched plans to compete at the University of Georgia starting in the fall, after previously signing a National Letter of Intent with South Carolina.

This year, Thompson placed second in Class AAAA at the state track championships with an 11.07 in the 100 at Jefferson.

To qualify for the US Track and Field Championships, Thompson had to qualify through three grueling meets earlier this summer.

He placed in the top eight at the state championship meet at Mill Creek High, then went on to earn a qualifying spot from the regionals two weeks back in Winter Park, Fla.
