"The Power of the Purse" kicked off Thursday’s fundraiser for WomenSource, a new nonprofit organization to help educate and connect women with resources in the community.

The event took place on the lawn at Brenau University and featured food, music and a fashion show with local women and retailers.

"We’re excited about the fun, the entertainment portion. But really the purpose is to let the women of this community know about WomenSource and get them excited about supporting other women in the community," said Robyn Lynch, chairwoman of the Power of the Purse event committee.

Spokeswoman LeTrell Simpson spoke about the purpose of WomenSource — supporting and empowering the women of the community.

"Our goal tonight is to educate and energize you," Simpson said. "We have a responsibility to use our strengths and assets to take care of the women in our community."

WomenSource already has planned a number of events, including a brown bag lunch series. Once a month, a guest speaker will give a talk covering a variety of topics.

For example, the October event, "Take Action: Election Day is Coming," will help inform women about the important issues in the upcoming election.

WomenSource Chairwoman Dixie Truelove estimated that about 350 women of different ages and backgrounds attended the event.

Carol Crowell said she was excited about the new organization.

"I think it’s awesome," Crowell said. "There’s definitely a need in Gainesville."

Cindy Wilson said she was impressed by the diverse group that showed up to support the cause.

"I just think it’s a wonderful thing they’ve done ... for women and the empowerment of women," Wilson said.

Membership is $35 a year, and founding members will donate $1,000.

"The Power of the Purse is the name of the event, to show the power of women’s philanthropy — when you get a group of women together, how powerful not only their finances but their expertise can be," Lynch said.
