POSTED: July 23, 2013 11:07 p.m.

No one was hurt this morning in a house fire in the 700 block of West Avenue in Gainesville.

Three people were at home at the time, but all got out safely, Chief Jerome Yarbrough said.

The fire started in the basement about 7 a.m. Firefighters were able to put out the fire in about 15 minutes but not before it and ended up causing about 60 percent damage to the house, the chief said.

American Red Cross is helping the family, Yarbrough said.

A mother and her two children, ages 8 and one 12, were home at the time of the fire. The 12-year-old boy awoke to the smell of smoke and found the basement on fire. He alerted his brother and mother and they fled to a neighbor's house to call 911, according to a Gainesville Fire Department news release.

A 21-year-old resident was at work at the time of the fire.

The fire is currently under investigation by the Fire Marshal’s Office, which estimates approximately $75,000 structure damage and $15,000 damage for contents.
