Medical center ranked No. 8 in Georgia by U.S. News

POSTED: July 16, 2013 12:08 a.m.

Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville has been ranked as the No. 8 hospital in Georgia, according to a U.S. News & World Report study of hospitals nationwide.

The hospital was declared “high performing” in cardiology and heart surgery, diabetes and endocrinology, gastroenterology and gastrointestinal surgery, geriatrics and pulmonology, states the report, which was issued today.

“A hospital that emerges from our analysis as one of the best has much to be proud of,” said Avery Comarow, U.S. News health rankings editor. “Only about 15 percent of hospitals are recognized for high performance as among their region’s best.”

U.S News publishes Best Hospitals to help guide patients who need a high level of care because they face particularly difficult surgery, a challenging condition or added risk because of other health problems or age. Objective measures such as patient survival and safety data, the adequacy of nurse staffing levels and other data largely determined the rankings in most specialties.

The magazine published the rankings in collaboration with RTI International, a leading research organization based in Research Triangle Park, N.C.

“We are thrilled to be ranked for the second year in a row by U.S. News and World Report as a Best Hospital,” says Carol Burrell, president and CEO of Northeast Georgia Health System.

“This national accolade is another feather in our cap for 2013, having been named one of America’s 50 Best Hospitals and a 100 Top Hospitals award winner earlier this year.”

The U.S. News specialty awards “are in some of the same areas recognized as best-in-state by Healthgrades, further validating that Northeast Georgia Medical Center is a proven leader in advanced specialty care,” Burrell said.

Healthgrades is the an online resource for comprehensive information about physicians and hospitals.
