Rain likely for upcoming July Fourth holiday

If you’re planning on celebrating the Fourth of July outdoors, prepare for rain.

The National Weather Service has issued a flash flood watch for North Georgia that is effective from Wednesday morning until Friday morning.

“The weather will probably impact July Fourth celebrations,” said a forecaster from the weather service. “Some folks may be able to get festivities in between storms, but some may be rained out.”

Currently, there is an 80 percent chance of precipitation on Independence Day, some of which may be heavy rainfall. The high will be in the 80s, which is below normal for the time of year, according to the weather service. Thunderstorms are likely Thursday night.

The flood watch notes that “rainfall amounts of 2 to 4 inches are likely over the watch area, with localized higher amounts possible.”

“Persons planning outdoor activities this week, including those on the Fourth of July, should continue to monitor the latest forecasts and begin making contingency plans in case hazardous weather threatens,” the weather service noted in a special weather statement.

Several area July Fourth celebrations have contingency plans for rain.

The American Legion will meet Wednesday morning to discuss a possible reschedule date if the display at Laurel Park in Gainesville is rained out.

Dawsonville’s Sparks in the Park will reschedule for Aug. 30 in the case of heavy rain. Notice of a cancellation would be posted on www.dawsoncounty.org.

The Mall of Georgia’s Fabulous Fourth will continue rain or shine, according to a spokeswoman.

More than an inch of rain was recorded between 4 and 5 p.m. Monday at Lee Gilmer Memorial Airport in Gainesville.

There is a 70 percent chance of rain on July 3, with highs near 80, and a 50 percent chance of rain on July 5, with highs also near 80.
