Fireworks safety

POSTED: July 1, 2013 11:39 p.m.
  • Know your fireworks. Read the caution label before igniting.
  • Use fireworks outdoors only.
  • All fireworks should be lit at least 10-20 feet from a structure or dry vegetation.
  • Obey local laws. If fireworks are not legal where you live, do not use them.
  • Always have water handy (a hose or bucket) or a fire extinguisher.
  • Shoot the fireworks on sturdy level ground (asphalt or concrete is best).
  • Only use fireworks as intended. Don’t try to alter them or combine them.
  • Do not ever use homemade fireworks made of illegal explosives. Report illegal explosives to the fire or police department in your community.
  • Avoid buying fireworks that are packaged in brown paper because this is often a sign that the fireworks were made for professional displays and that they could pose a danger to consumers.
  • Never relight a malfunctioning firework. Wait 20 minutes and then soak it in a bucket of water.
  • Use common sense. Spectators should keep a safe distance from the shooter, and the shooter should wear safety glasses.
  • Never place any part of your body directly over a fireworks device when lighting the fuse. Back up to a safe distance immediately after lighting fireworks.
  • Never throw fireworks at another person.
  • Never carry fireworks in a pocket or shoot them off in metal or glass containers
  • Alcohol and fireworks do not mix. Have a “designated shooter.”
  • Only those older than 12 should be allowed to handle sparklers of any type.
  • Never hold a child in your arms while using sparklers.
  • Never discard fireworks in the trash; soak them in a bucket of water first.
  • Remember to call 911 for emergencies.
