Gainesville native sings for President Obama in Berlin

POSTED: June 20, 2013 12:27 a.m.

A Gainesville native has made it to the big time in her vocal performance career.

Early Wednesday, Ingrid Arthur sang a selection of songs for President Barack Obama.

Ingrid sang at 7:30 a.m. Eastern Standard Time at the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin. Arthur has lived in the Berlin area for 15 years, she said.

Arthur was discovered to perform for this event because of videos of her performances posted on YouTube. She said it was a last-minute decision.

“Before you knew it, I was at the Brandenburg Gate,” Arthur said.

“I’m still in awe of everything that is happening. ... I’ve still got to pinch myself.”

Although Arthur is known mostly for singing gospel music, her albums include what she calls “party” songs.

Arthur discovered President Obama’s top 10 favorite songs and chose “What’s Going On,” by Marvin Gaye, to perform. She also sang an original song from her latest album called “We Are One,” among other selections.

Of all the things going through her mind, she said her main concern was remembering the lyrics.

She said she was very pleased with the event overall.

“I think it went wonderful,” Arthur said.

Arthur grew up as a member of the youth choir at St. John’s Baptist Church in Gainesville, graduated from Gainesville High School in 1985, and Pam Ware, director of the theatre department at Gainesville High, was one of her teachers.

“She’s just a beautiful, beautiful person inside and out,” Ware said.

Ware said she was amazed at how far a former “leading lady” in her productions had come.

“What the opportunity of a lifetime,” Ware said. “God has blessed Ingrid with a beautiful voice.”

Ware said she is proud of the accomplishments made by her students, including Arthur, whom she called a “self-made lady.”

Arthur tours around the world.
