Local Boy Scouts of America Troop 3 scouts ceremoniously cut the stripes from a worn American flag Friday evening at a flag retirement ceremony behind First Presbyterian Church before burning each stripe as the local Col. William Candler Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution looked on.

Only one cotton flag was burned at Friday’s ceremony, held in honor of Flag Day, as Scoutmaster John Marshall Sr. explained how polyester flags cause copious amounts of dark, harmful smoke.

Scouts will ceremoniously bury the DAR members’ remaining 11 flags, he said.

Donna Hulsey, DAR flag chairman, said, “The flag is a symbol of our country. It is very important to properly dispose of flags because it is such a symbol.”
