Learn safe boating practices

Flotilla 29 of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, Lake Lanier, will have a one-day, seven-lesson ”About boating safely” course Saturday, June 15.

Classes run from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Coast Guard Auxiliary Operations Center, 6595 Lights Ferry Road, in Flowery Branch. It is on the left before the entrance to Aqualand Marina.

Course cost is $40. Discounts are available for additional family members.

The course also serves as a PWC-certified course for children younger than 16 years old.

Course contents include:

* Know your boat
* Before you get under way
* Navigating the waterways
* Operating your vessel safely
* Legal requirements of boating
* Boating emergencies “What to do”
* Enjoy water sports with your boat
* State of Georgia regulations

Successful completion may result in a reduction in boat insurance premium.

The Corps of Engineers at Lakes Lanier and Allatoona are offering a free one-year pass to the day parks for anyone who can show evidence of completing a 2013 approved safe boating course.
