Times receives top prize in Ga. press awards

The Times earned 16 overall awards Friday night in the Georgia Press Association’s annual Better Newspaper Contest, including first place in General Excellence for a fifth straight year.

The awards were presented at the GPA’s annual conference in Jekyll Island. Newspapers of all sizes from around the state were judged by members of the West Virginia Press Association.

The Times was awarded first for General Excellence among the state’s midsized daily papers.

“The general excellence award from the Georgia Press Association recognizes achievement in both news content and advertising,” Times Publisher Dennis Stockton said. “We are the No. 1 media source for both news and advertising in our area, and that is an obligation we take very seriously. We are proud of what we do for our readers and advertisers, and honored to have been named the best newspaper of our size in the state for the fifth consecutive year.

The Times’ first-place awards were for Information Graphics, R. Keith Hatchell, tops among all the state’s daily papers; and Hard News Writing, Ashley Fielding; and Headline Writing.

The Times swept the division in Headline Writing, winning the top three prizes.

The paper earned second-place awards for Spot News Photo, Tom Reed; Business Coverage; Hard News Writing, Aaron Hale; Feature Writing, Brandee A. Thomas; Headline Writing; and Sports Writing.

The Times’ third-place awards included Sports Feature Photograph, Scott Rogers; Feature Writing, Jeff Gill; Religion Coverage, Thomas; Special Issues, High School Football Preview; Editorial Writing, Keith Albertson; and Headline Writing.
