The Local Agenda: Hall County tax commissioner steps up tax collection on mobile homes

POSTED: May 28, 2013 12:05 a.m.

Hall County Tax Commissioner Darla Eden is taking nonpayment of taxes on mobile homes seriously.

The Hall County Tax Commissioner’s Office has started a “renewed effort” to actively monitor tax payments on mobile homes. The county gives the property owners a decal to display on their homes that is visible from roadways. All taxes must be fully paid to get the decal.

For mobile homes that aren’t displaying the sticker properly, the Hall County Marshal’s Office can issue a $25 ticket. If the owner is required to appear in Magistrate Court, the judge could issue a fine of up to $1,000 and/or 60 days in jail per ticket.

Holiday alters Gainesville garbage pickup schedule

The city of Gainesville was closed Monday for the Memorial Day holiday. Residents who get their garbage and recycling picked up on Mondays will get it picked up today, and Tuesday customers will have their garbage and recycling picked up Wednesday.

Hall stresses use of alert system

The recent storm damage and upcoming hurricane season are some reasons county officials are encouraging residents to sign up for its emergency alert system. County staff can notify citizens about critical situations, including severe weather, fires, floods, toxic spills and in-process violent crimes. Messages can be sent to many electronic devices such as cellphones, email, text messaging and pagers. They can also be sent to landline phones.

A news release from the county said the system can send life-saving information and public service announcements in minutes.

Residents listed in the county’s 911 database have been automatically subscribed to alerts by landline, though individuals may self-register, provide additional contact information or opt out by logging on to the Hall County government website and clicking on the Citizen’s Alert icon.
