The Local Agenda: Germans to come to Hall to study immigration

POSTED: May 21, 2013 12:24 a.m.

A group from Germany will be visiting Hall County on Wednesday, looking to learn about American cultural life and political issues but particularly immigration.

The group from the German-American Institute in Tuebingen, Germany, will discuss the issue as immigration has become an issue in its country as economics shift in Europe.

The group plans to discuss the immigration experiences in Gainesville, including school and language issues.

Gainesville offers mosquito control to residents

Gainesville is offering mosquito control briquettes to residents after neighbors in the Lakeshore Heights Subdivision complained about insect infestations in detention ponds.

“We actually got the idea from Athens-Clarke County where they’ve been using them for several years,” said David Dockery, Public Works director, in a news release. “We thought it would be a good idea due to the unusually wet spring we’re having.”

The briquettes can be used to control mosquito larvae in small areas of standing water.

City residents can pick up six briquettes per visit at the Street Maintenance Division’s shop on Alta Vista Road. Residents must sign for them and pick up instructions. Call Kathleen Denny at 770-503-3054 to make an appointment for pickup.

Hall County Commissioners to meet on Wednesday

The Hall County Board of Commissioners is once again meeting at 3 p.m. Wednesday instead of its regularly scheduled Thursday slot at 6 p.m.
