3rd suspect sought by school and police in graffiti incident

POSTED: May 16, 2013 12:21 a.m.

Gainesville school officials and police were still working Wednesday to determine the identity of the third person involved in vandalism at Gainesville High School.

Graffiti was found Tuesday morning on a modular building and the outside of the gym, Superintendent Merrianne Dyer said.

Two students were identified from video surveillance as Gainesville seniors, Dyer said. The school will handle the incident as a student disciplinary issue. Dyer said the system may pursue criminal charges but is waiting until the third person is identified.

“The school’s going to help with the disciplinary action because, as I said, restitution is what we’re more interested in,” she said.

The incident appears to be an end-of-the-school-year prank and is not gang-related, she said.

Cpl. Joe Britte with the Gainesville Police Department said it’s likely the result of class rivalry between the juniors and seniors.

Workers with the city’s Maintenance and Operations department removed the graffiti.
