For a senior at Riverside Military Academy who enjoys history, there is no better place than the U.S. Military Academy.

“Riverside has done a lot to prepare me for West Point,” said Michael Sims, who will be heading there this fall. “West Point is over 200 years old. It’s deep in mystique and tradition.

“It’s internationally recognized as one of the best, if not the best school in the world.”

The school, located in West Point, N.Y., was established as the U.S. Military Academy in 1802 by President Thomas Jefferson.

Among some of West Point’s most recognizable graduates, former presidents Ulysses S. Grant and Dwight D. Eisenhower, Gen. George S. Patton and current Duke men’s basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski.

“It’s amazing and humbling to be accepted (into West Point),” Sims said. “People who don’t know what West Point is recognize the name.”

Though Sims is undecided as to what he’ll major in while at the academy, he said he’s leaning toward history.

Sims also said that after he graduates, there’s a mandatory time of service, but he wants to make a career in the U.S. Army as an officer in the infantry. Sims said he doesn’t have a history of military service in his family but his family has been supportive.

“My family has been incredibly supportive,” he said. “At first, when I told my family I wanted to do infantry, they were like, ‘Wait, that doesn’t fit you’.

“However, over time, they have been warming up to me going into the infantry.”
