For 12 years, Robert Bland, a senior at Flowery Branch High School, has made a mission trip to Nicaragua.

Now, with graduation from high school on the horizon, and Georgia Tech welcoming him in the fall, Bland isn’t letting this chapter of life go by the wayside.

“I’m pretty excited to graduate,” Bland said. “But I’m glad I can move on to this next opportunity.”

That next opportunity involves his annual trip to Nicaragua.

“Every single year I feel more and more blessed to go down there,” he said. “I absolutely love it down there.”

Bland said he leaves in late May and will be gone for 10 weeks.

He also explained that the main goal of the trip is to dig wells so the local people will have fresh drinking water. Among some of the adventures he will partake in are climbing to the top of a local volcano the first day he’s there and later helping to construct schools, which he said will help with the country’s economic situation.

The No. 1 reason he has continued to go on the mission trip to Nicaragua? His faith.

“Faith and why we exist is the No. 1 priority in my life,” he said. “That is the thing I’m focused on. My mom and dad are both missionaries. They want me to be the best I can be with God and with my life.”

Bland said he plans on majoring in mechanical engineering while attending Tech. After college, he said he wants to go into the Peace Corps for a couple of years to continue helping others.
