Eyes on the Road: New Clarks Bridge work to start in the fall

POSTED: May 5, 2013 11:59 p.m.

Work could start a few months later than expected on an $8.7 million effort to replace the 55-year-old Clarks Bridge on Ga. 284/Clarks Bridge Road at Lake Lanier.

The project had been expected to start this spring or summer, but the contractor, E.R. Snell Contractor of Snellville, is going to wait to start on the project until September, said Teri Pope, Georgia Department of Transportation district spokeswoman.

She offered no further explanation, but said the DOT “holds the contractor to the contract completion date not a start date.”

The new two-lane bridge will feature bike lanes, sidewalks and a 63-foot pedestrian tunnel.

Officials have said the new bridge will be 952 feet long, nearly 50 feet wide and have five columns in Lake Lanier. Bike lanes and sidewalks will run along Ga. 284 for 2,781 feet.

All totaled, the bridge and approaches to the structure will run for more than a half-mile.

The current bridge, built in 1958, is 834 feet long and nearly 24 feet wide.

DOT starts to buy right of way on widening project

Right-of-way acquisition has started on widening Ga. 13 from Sawnee Avenue in Buford to Ga. 347/Lanier Islands Parkway in South Hall County.

The project involves 64 parcels, and the DOT has closed on two, Pope said.

The right-of-way estimate is $9 million and the construction, estimated to cost $8 million, is scheduled for fiscal 2014-15.

Buford spent $450,000 for preliminary engineering on the 1.53-mile project, which calls for widening Ga. 13/Buford Highway from two lanes to four lanes divided with a 20-foot raised median and 5-foot sidewalks on both sides.

The road would tie into a newly widened Ga. 347 between McEver Road/Peachtree Industrial Boulevard and Interstate 985. Work on that $14 million project is ongoing, with completion set for Nov. 30, 2014.

Crews to repair Ga. 347 in South Hall this week

DOT crews plan to repair a damaged 1-mile stretch of Ga. 347/Thompson Mill Road near Duncan’s Corner in South Hall.

Crews will work 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. today through Friday, weather permitting.

The work, which is not part of the Ga. 347 widening between I-985 and Ga. 211/Old Winder Highway, will require a lane closure and flagger directing traffic through the work area.

Damaged asphalt also will be patched on U.S. 129/Athens Highway south of the DOT district office at 2505 Athens Highway and Ga. 323/Gillsville Highway.

This work also requires a lane closure and a flagger directing traffic.

Commission to hear report on countywide paving plan

The Hall County Board of Commissioners is set to hear a report today from Ken Rearden, public works and utilities director, on 21.33 miles of resurfacing of 40 various county roads.

The meeting, set to begin at 2:45 p.m., will take place at the Hall County Government Center, 2875 Browns Bridge Road.
