Derby hats star at local celebration

POSTED: May 5, 2013 1:22 a.m.

Gainesville Rotary Club Derby Party chair Chris Slate, center, greets Jerry and Leslie Williams at the Elks Club on Riverside Drive Saturday afternoon. Leslie Williams would later win the best woman’s hat award at Saturday’s event coinciding with the Kentucky Derby. The party, the first of a possible annual event, helped raise money for the Rotary’s various charitable causes, Slate said. Partygoers paid $50 each at the door, bid on auction items such as gift baskets from area merchants and entered a raffle. “One hundred percent of the money goes to Rotary service projects,” Slate said. Projects include building wheelchair ramps, the Alliance for Literacy, the local food bank, Our Neighbor, Inc., Boys and Girls Club and Women Source, according to a Rotary statement. Sandra and Jack Bailey make their way Saturday to accept the “Colt and Filly” award for the couple with the best hat at the party. Sandra Bailey, a former publisher of The Times, made her hat from a box that flower bulbs came in, she said.
