Gainesville, Johnson boys advance in soccer playoffs

The Johnson boys soccer team took a lead into halftime and held on to win 2-1 against Columbus in the first round of the Class AAAA state tournament on Wednesday in Oakwood.

Armando Abarca found Fabian Abarca who put it in the net for the Knights with 7:41 left in the first half. Johnson went up 2-0 as Jonathan Mendoza scored on a pass from Jonathan Gillham with 10 minutes left in play.

In the first half, Columbus had just two shots on goal but was able to find the back of the goal with approximately five minutes left. The Knights’ defense tightened up and was able to preserve the lead for the remainder of the game.

Jose Martinez earned the win in goal for Johnson with six saves.

The Knights visit Dalton on Wednesday in Dalton. Game time is still to be determined.

GAINESVILLE BOYS 3, NORTH PAULDING 0: Ricardo Gomez scored two goals against a disciplined North Paulding defense to earn the win in the first round of the Class AAAAA state playoffs on Wednesday at City Park Stadium.

The Red Elephants were up 1-0 at the half, when they made some adjustments to increase possession through the center midfield. Gomez scored a second goal after the half, and Howard credited Alberto Murillo with much of the possession that helped Gainesville maintain the lead. The Red Elephants capped off the scoring with a goal from Cesar Regaldo.

Juan Remes earned the shutout in goal for Gainesville.

The Red Elephants visit Pope on Wednesday in Marietta. Game time is still to be determined.

Correction: Flowery Branch, which will play in the state sectional qualifier on Saturday at the Westlake Country Club of Augusta, was paced by Eric Little (73), Kameron Williams (74), Colby Stone (77) and Jordan Windish (79) in last week’s Region 8-AAAAA tournament, where they finished in second place at Chattahoochee.
