Gainesville High School’s William Morris was named Georgia’s STAR student on Monday night in Atlanta.

Gainesville City Schools Superintendent Merrianne Dyer said Morris was one of 13 students in the state competition at the Crowne Plaza Ravinia hotel in Atlanta.

The event included interviews where the students were assessed on being well-rounded, exhibiting overall leadership and showing excellence, Dyer said.

“We’ve had one other (state) student winner in the last 25 years, so this is exciting for us,” Dyer said.

Morris’ chose Pam Michelsen, an English teacher, as his STAR Teacher.

Morris will be attending Harvard University in the fall and has said he will be studying law with a concentration on civil service. He has said he would like to work for the federal government someday in the State Department.

He is the son of Brad and Renee Morris.

The Gainesville Kiwanis Club sponsors the STAR Awards locally.

The award includes a $5,000 scholarship.
