Recommit to healthier eating, fitness in spring

Good food is a key part of warm weather gatherings for holidays such as Memorial Day and area outdoor events such as festivals and concerts.

Consumers can enjoy tasty snacks and delicious meals during seasonal activities and keep their health a priority at the same time.

Even though your 2013 fitness or health-related New Year’s resolutions may be off track or long forgotten, there is hope. You can still make wise choices with these tips offered by The University of Georgia Cooperative Extension:

Be physically active between 60 to 90 minutes on most days of week.

Keep food diaries at least one week a month. More often is better.

Begin resistance training (weight training).

Eat breakfast every day.

Eat at least 2 cups of fruit and 2 1/2 cups of vegetables per day.

Make at least half of your grain choices whole grain.

Eat fried food less during the week.

Get a weight maintenance partner.

Limit the amount of sugar-sweetened beverages consumed.

Take a look at the website, www.choosemyplate.gov. You will find daily food plans, sample menus, recipes, tips for college students, videos and more.

Also, the site’s SuperTracker helps consumers plan and track their diet and fitness activity.

The Georgia Mountain Food Bank is getting ready for its Summer Lunch Bag Program. Volunteers will assemble 500 to 600 sack lunches weekdays during June and July. Hours are 8:30-11:30 a.m. at the GMFB, 1642 Calvary Industrial Drive S.W., in Gainesville.

This is a great opportunity for youth, student and church groups and area civic and corporate organizations.

Through a network of community partners, the Georgia Mountain Food Bank addresses hunger, health and quality of life by serving those in need.
