Gainesville City Council discusses fitness center uses

POSTED: April 12, 2013 12:46 a.m.

The Gainesville City Council talked Thursday about community uses at the Frances Meadows Aquatic Center, 1545 Community Way.

As part of a budget discussion concerning parks and recreation, Councilwoman Myrtle Figueras said a proposed fitness room at the center wasn’t originally planned.

“When we first came up with changing the community room into an exercise room, it was my suggestion that we tried our best to utilize spaces underneath the community rooom.

“I still believe there is a need for a community center room,” Figueras said.

Melvin Cooper, parks and recreation director, said, “Sometimes things change because (demand for) services go up ... or down.”

The walking trails are still in the master plan, he added.

“It’s just a money thing,” Cooper said.

As far as the gym, use by the middle school has been higher than expected, he said.

Council members heard budget presentations from other city departments, including police and fire.
