Hall County Schools Board of Education approves 2 principal recommendations

POSTED: April 9, 2013 12:53 a.m.

The Hall County Board of Education approved the superintendent’s recommendation to hire two new school principals at its meeting Monday night.

Jason Carter, currently the assistant principal of Johnson High School, will become the principal of Flowery Branch High School. Carter will replace Mark Coleman, who is retiring at the end of May.

Shane Rayburn, current principal of Oakwood Elementary School, was selected to be the principal of North Hall Middle School. Rayburn will replace Brad Brown, who was recently named executive director of personnel at the district’s central office in Gainesville.

Nearly 50 people, many of them from outside the district, applied for each position,

Superintendent Will Schofield said he couldn’t be more pleased that both new principals came from within the school system.

Both Flowery Branch High and North Hall Middle formed selection committees of parents, teachers, district personnel and school governance leaders to find new principals.

After an interview process, each member of the committee rated the applicants and then the group voted on its first choice.

“Just very honestly, the interview is probably 15 percent of the interview process,” Schofield said. “What the person has done over the last 10 years becomes more important than what a person can do in an hour with a committee.”

Brown explained that the selection process involves a “lot of leg work” to make sure certifications are up to date and qualifications are verified.

Schofield said the system will start advertising for a new principal for Oakwood Elementary.
