Next week’s job fair moves to new venue

POSTED: April 3, 2013 12:41 a.m.

The Greater Hall Chamber of Commerce job fair next week will be at a new site.

Set for 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 10, the fair will be held at the Gainesville Civic Center, 830 Green St. NE. Last year’s fair was held at the Georgia Mountains Center, which has since been transformed into the Brenau Downtown Center.

While the civic center space may be smaller than what was available at the mountains center, “we don’t have any choice,” said Kit Dunlap, president and CEO of the chamber. “We’re just doing the best we can. We’ve taken over the top floor of the civic center.”

“We’ll have shuttles that will be running all day,” Dunlap said, “We’re going to let a certain amount (of people) in at a time.”

The job fair is open to the public, and there is no admission fee.

“We’ve done this several times,” Dunlap said. “We do it for two reasons. One is certainly to help the employers, and also to help the people who are out there looking (for jobs).”

Employers will have a chance to fill openings faster by meeting hundreds of job candidates face-to-face during a short period of time.

For people looking for work, the event provides face time and personal contact with hiring managers.

Employer booths are still available, at $275, or $175 for nonprofits. This is an extra $25 charge for electricity.

More than 50 employers have planned booths.

“We could have up to 60,” Dunlap said, “but over 50 have committed so far. There may be more (companies) that are hiring this year.”

Dunlap said that number may be more than in the past, but is comparable to previous fairs.

According to a report released Thursday by the Georgia Department of Labor, the unemployment rate in metro Gainesville, which includes all of Hall County, declined to 6.9 percent in February. It was 7.4 percent in January and 8 percent in February a year ago.
